How Do I Find the Right Therapist?
Finding the right therapist is the key to successful therapy. The therapist’s training, professional experience, life experience and personality will effect how comfortable, safe, and well understood you will feel. If you have been in psychotherapy or counseling before you may well have opinions about what worked or didn’t work for you about the therapy or therapist. Even if you have never been in therapy before, you do develop opinions about people you meet every day. We encourage you to use your judgement to determine the therapist with whom you want to work.
We offer an initial interview at no charge so that you may ask questions to determine whether one of us is the right therapist for you. You are welcome to ask professional questions, theoretical questions, life questions, anything that will help inform you as a consumer in selecting a therapist. If you prefer to use the interview time talking about the issues which concern you and bring you to therapy, we will give you guidance as to how we would approach working with you on your goals.
What Qualities Do I Look for In a Therapist?
Hopefully you are going to build a very important, trusting relationship with your therapist. While this will be based primarily on your open and honest exploration about yourself, most people find it easier to build trust once they know a little about their therapist’s personality, experience and appraoch.
- Are they the kind of person you admire and could trust? Do they demonstrate honesty, integrity, kindness and compassion? Do they seem confident and assertive? Will they be candid and talk straight with you? Do they seem knowledgeable, confident and assertive?
- What is the therapist’s training and experience? Do they have experience with the type of issues you want to address?
